Blackstone, a suburb of Ipswich, is located about 28 km from the capital Brisbane. It spans an area of 3.815 sq km.
As of 2016, the suburb had 1,024 residents.
The area was originally a mining town and called Bundamba Creek. However, the name caused confusion with its neighbour, Bundamba, so the Blackstone name was proposed.
Like many of the other older suburbs in Ipswich, Blackstone has a number of heritage-listed sites including United Welsh Church, Blackstone Congregational Church, Cambrian House and Blackstone State School.
Though there are no schools in Blackstone, there are excellent schools in nearby Silkstone, Raceview and Bundamba.
Blackstone, like the other suburbs in Ipswich and Brisbane, experiences hot or dry weather almost throughout the year. Unfortunately, the suburb is also vulnerable to flooding because of its proximity to Bundamba Creek. The infamous 2011 flooding affected mainly the creek-side land and parks in Blackstone.
Below is the type of pests that can potentially attack and cause damage to properties in Blackstone.
Cockroaches – they grow them big in Australia. Try leaving food scraps in a park bench somewhere and it will be crawling with nasty cockroaches in no time. That is how cockroaches are a major concern in the country.
The first sign that you have a cockroach problem is when you see one. Chances are high that if you see one, there are plenty more in hiding. Cockroaches are active only at night, so you may be able to catch sight of them crawling in your bathroom, kitchen or dining area.
It might be normal to see cockroaches, but they must still be treated and eliminated. They carry disease-causing germs and viruses that can be transmitted to humans. These diseases include gastroenteritis, dysentery, tuberculosis, hepatitis, typhoid fever and more.
You must watch out for cockroach droppings, empty egg cases, vomit as these can contaminate upon contact with food, utensils and various surfaces.
Ants are common in residential and commercial properties in Queensland due to our humid, sub-tropical climate. Exposed food attracts ants. This includes pet food left out in a bowl.
If you see an increase in ant population, this may be a sign that a problem is forthcoming, or an infestation is already happening. Inside your home, you might find ants in the kitchen, dining room and bin areas.
There are many home remedies for getting rid of ants, but the best way to evict them from your home is to have licensed pest controllers treat your property for ants.
Another ubiquitous pest in Australia is the spider. Most species of spiders are harmless. However, Australia has its fair share of venomous spiders, which are dangerous to pets, children and the elderly.
Seeing one or two spiders may not mean an infestation. However, it’s time to be alarmed and take action if you see plenty of spider webs suddenly appearing in your home.
If you see spiders in your home or garden, it’s time to call for a pest control technician to apply treatment before the problem becomes even bigger.

These shiny, wingless bugs thrive in Southeast Queensland. They multiply quickly and will be harder to eliminate, if they are in great numbers. If silverfish infestation is ignored, these pests will cause damage and your home and belongings.
They are nocturnal, but the easiest way to discover them is by finding the damage they caused. Silverfish feed on paper, book bindings, adhesives, wallpapers, and even clothing and linens. If you find holes chewed in these items, you might be having a silverfish issue and should seek professional assistance.
These social animals live in groups, so don’t expect to have just one or two rodents living in your house. They multiply fast, so a couple of rodents will become a family in a matter of weeks.
Droppings, gnaw marks and sounds of scampering in your roof are signs that there might be rodents sharing your house with you. You invite rats or mice when you often leave food scraps or waste. One of the simplest ways to keep rodents away is to store your food in containers and not leave food around.
Rats and mice are dangerous because they carry harmful diseases, such as leptospirosis, Typhus, the plague, and more. The best way to avoid any of the diseases is to do your best in keeping rodents away from your house.
Wasps are also common in Queensland. They can be difficult to spot but it’s easy to hear them buzzing. If you are seeing wasps or hearing them, it is a sign that you have an issue to deal with.
Wasps can destroy your plants, so if you discover a nest, call a professional pest controller. Don’t attempt to get rid of the nest or treat the wasps yourself, as that can be dangerous because wasps can be aggressive when they feel provoked or threatened.
Termites are a real threat in Queensland, due to our warm and humid climate conditions. This makes termite inspections important for homeowners. It is recommended that homeowners have termite inspections once or twice every year, depending on whether your property is high risk.
This is the first defense of Australian homes against termites. Prevention is key when it comes to termites because building or homeowners’ insurance doesn’t cover termite damage.

High – Very High Risk
According to the Interim Termite Hazard Map by CSIRO, the Ipswich area, where Blackstone is located, is in the high-risk category for termite infestation.
Because Blackstone is close to the sea, the area is a good target by drywood termites, which need high moisture content in the timber they attack.
Throughout Queensland, the most commonly found termites are Subterranean termites and Drywood termites.
The West Indian drywood termite, is the world’s most destructive drywood termite. It is the culprit to massive economic damage to timber houses in Queensland, including properties in Blackstone.
